1943 년 매국 캘리포니아 오렌지 카운티(Orange California)  태어난

새미 스미스는 1960년 대초 남, 서부 클럽 등지에서 음악생활 시작

1967년 오클라호마에서 자니 캐시와 그의 밴드를 만나
베이스 주자인 마아샬 그랜트에 오디션테이프를 들려주면서 인연을 맺게 되었는데
그 후 캐시와 그랜트의 도움으로 그녀는 네쉬빌로 공연을 가서
콜롬비아 레코드사와 계약을 맺게 됩니다.
