저는 영어를 배우기 위해 조기유학에 일장일단이 있다고 생각합니다. 아동기는 아이의 성장에 있어서 매우 중요한 시기이기 때문에 아이를 완전히 다른 나라에 강제로 보내는 것은 아이들에게 문화적 혼란을 야기할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 일단, 아이들이 새로운 환경에 적응하는데 어려움을 겪을 수 있습니다. 반대로 적응을 너무 잘해서 한국에 다시 돌아왔을 때 역으로 문화 충격을 받을 수도 있습니다. 또한 아이들이 외국으로 유학을 갈 경우 가족들과 흔히 떨어져 지내야 하는 것도 사실입니다. 물론 요즘 영어가 매우 중요하지만 단지 영어 교육을 위해서 아이들의 아동기를 희생시켜야 하는 것에 대해서는 개인적으로 의구심이 듭니다.

I have mixed feelings about sending kids overseas for English education at an early age. I think childhood is an important time for a child’s development, and forcing a child to live in a completely different country other than Korean could make them culturally confused. First, they could have a hard time adjusting to the new environment. On the flip side, they could adjust so well that returning to Korea could be a reverse culture shock. It’s also true that families are often separated when children go abroad to study. Of course, English is very important these days, but I am personally not sure we should sacrifice children’s childhood just for the sake for English education.
